When it comes to knowledge of the historical timeline of fishing lures and tackle, Dan Basore is in a class by himself.
From his early years hanging around the Sutphin family tackle shop in Speedway, Ind., where his fascination with vintage bass lures began, to serving as a key resource in securing many of the historical lures displayed at Bass Pro Shops locations nationwide — as well as at the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame exhibit within Johnny Morris’ Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium — Basore has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the sport’s foremost historians.
Because of that deep knowledge and lifelong passion, the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors is proud to honor Basore as the organization’s ninth recipient of its Meritorious Service Award.
“There are special people within the sport of bass fishing who contribute to its success in unique and lasting ways,” said past Board President John Mazurkiewicz. “Through his efforts, Dan has made — and continues to make — significant contributions to the sport, particularly in preserving its history. That commitment aligns perfectly with the mission of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame.”
Basore’s interest in historical tackle began in his teenage years when he inherited his late grandfather’s tackle box. The first display he created fueled a lifelong passion that continues today. Over the decades, his growing expertise led to collaborations with many of the sport’s leading tackle brands, including Shimano, Bagley, Bill Norman, and others.
When Ray Scott founded B.A.S.S., Basore was among the organization’s earliest members. He also suggested the idea of lifetime memberships and became the first to enroll. Throughout his involvement in the sport, Basore participated in fishing tournaments as a member of the Marion County (Ind.) Fish and Game Club and during the formative years of the B.A.S.S. trail.
Known by many as the “King of Lures,” Basore’s impact on the sport and its history makes him a fitting and deserving recipient of the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame’s Meritorious Service Award.
